Aged Glazed Terracotta Oval Jardinere with Applied Leaves and Iron Ring Handles
A wonderfully substantial aged glazed terracotta jardinière. Its elongated oval form is decorated with sculptural applied leaves beneath a thick rolled rim and finished with a pair of original open iron ring handles.
The glaze is especially beautiful—a wonderfully aged mix of warm ochre, olive, moss green and brown with extensive fine crazing, pooling and tonal variation. The hand-worked foliate decoration and dark iron hardware give the piece an earthy, old-world quality that feels equally at home in a traditional interior or a more collected, layered space.
The large iron rings hang from smaller fixed iron loops incorporated into the body. Both rings have matching intentional openings as part of their construction and retain a dark, naturally aged surface and patina.
At just over 7 pounds empty, this is a very heavy piece with wonderful presence. Use it as a jardinière for an arrangement of succulents or greenery, as a centerpiece on a large table or console, or simply as a sculptural decorative object.
The underside is unmarked. Maker and country of origin are unknown. Based on the construction, materials, decorative treatment, hardware and overall aging, I believe the piece dates to approximately late 19th to early 20th century; its exact age and origin have not been independently authenticated.
Condition: Good condition with the character and imperfections expected of a piece of this age. There is extensive overall glaze crazing and variation, scattered glaze loss, surface wear, staining and small chips/losses to portions of the applied leaf decoration. A pronounced linear line is present in the glaze at the rolled rim; upon inspection, it appears confined to the glaze and does not extend through the terracotta body. The iron ring handles show oxidation, patina and surface wear consistent with age. The unglazed underside shows considerable age/use wear and has later protective felt pads. No maker’s mark observed. Please review photographs closely as they are an important part of the condition description.
Plants and greenery are not included. Best suited for indoor use.
Dimensions: Approximately 11½–12” long × [width] wide × 5¼” high
Weight: 7 lb 1.3 oz
